Edward Brooke

On November 8, 1966, Edward Brooke, a former Massachusetts Attorney General was elected as the third African-American senator in U.S. History. Brooke attended Howard University and won a Bronze Star in World War II, as well as serving as Chairman of the Boston Finance Commission.

Edward Brooke was the third African American Senator. In 1870 Hiram Revels was elected was the first African American member of the United States Senate. The second African American senator, Blanche Kelso Bruce was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1875, to March 3, 1881. Both were Republicans representing Mississippi.
