The Role of the First Lady: Past, Present, and Future

Over the years, many unique women have held the role of first lady in the United States. Over time, the role of the first lady has evolved. There have been numerous influential first ladies in American History. Many first ladies advocate for projects they find important such as Laura Bush's focus on literacy. Many in the media have speculated on what type of first ladies the wives of John McCain and Barack Obama would be. Both Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama are professionals. Cindy McCain has a master's degree in Special Education. She is the chairwoman of Hensley & Co. She is very active in philanthropic organizations including Operation Smile, CARE, and the HALO Trust. Michelle Obama has a law degree. She is the Vice President for Community and External Affairs for the University of Chicago Hospitals. She also serves on the board of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. Each of these women have the ability to be influential forces as first lady.
