Historic Election of Barack Obama

Tuesday November 4, 2008
Tonight America has entered a new era with what appears to be the election of Barack Obama as the next president of the United States. He is the first African-American to become president. It seems as if the entire world has been focused on this election and has had an opinion on who should win. Some are hoping that the election of Barack Obama will mean a change in the way that America is viewed in the world. Unfortunately for Barack Obama, he is entering the presidency at a time of great economic upheaval with the likely prospect of major confrontations and foreign policy issues around the globe. Hopefully, his desire to move beyond partisanship and instead unify the American people will help rebuild the economy and America's image.

It is definitely a historic moment. Abe Lincoln was also elected at a time when pressures and problems seemed insurmountable and he was able to persevere. I hope the same from this extraordinary man.

He is not an Afro-American; that’s what got him elected. He is as much an Arab, even more so with his training and background. This does not necessarily mean good or bad either way, but I hope he has the charisma, intelligence, and, well, balls to do what he needs to do to get us back on track. He should not be our Afro-American President, but just our President. And yes, all kinds of history was made this time through, and maybe that’s a good thing.
