Oppenheimer Dies

Wednesday February 18, 2009
On February 18, 1967, Robert Oppenheimer died. He is best known for his work with the Manhattan Project that resulted in the atomic bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II. He later became an outspoken critic of the use of atomic bombs in war and lobbied for international cooperation and control of nuclear weapons.

In the Oppenheimer brief, shouldn’t the phrase “at the end of World War II” really be “to end World War II” which is what the bombings did.

I know some say Japan was ready to quit. But far more on both sides of the Pacific say Japan was prepared to fight on - until the bombs hit.
