This brings back memories! My grandparents lived in Manasas when I was very little and I learned about the Battles of Bull Run before I knew there had been a Civil War!
I remember learning about this battle as a child and wondering how people could have brought themselves to bring picnics to enjoy while they watched the battle. When I finally had the chance to visit the battlefield, I was struck by how tranquil it is now – it’s surrounded by suburbia. I am thankful this important space has been preserved.
When my son was young, we took him and a couple of his friends to this battlefield. They thought of these cannons as great climbing toys — I guess that’s a variation on “beating swords into plowshares.”
I had to look twice before I realize which way they point. Yikes. Wouldn’t want to be on the wrong (umm right) end of one of those under fire!
Although this was an ugly time in our nation’s history, it is important that we learn from the past and that’s why destinations like this are stops we must make from time to time. Thanks for sharing the photo.
All Gen.Lee had to do was persue, overtake
the broken, ineffective Yankee force with 1/3
of his line troops. The other 2/3 attack and
take DC in a three prong maneuver. He did have
the logistics and troop strength.
Hindsight.
Our history and present age would be quite
different, indeed.
