The Eagle Has Landed

Monday July 20, 2009
On this day, July 20, in 1969, the dream of many men and women throughout history came true: someone reached and walked on the moon. And no, it wasn't made of green cheese and did not have any forms of life or water on it. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were the first two human beings to walk on the moon. What was even more amazing was that this was viewed on television by millions of people around the globe. Our view of the world would never be the same.

I watched the moon landing live on a noon lunch break on 21 July. Of course at the time I was in the U.S. Navy in northern Japan. It was the “same day” but a day later due to the International Dateline.

I watched too, but I was a kid at home on summer break. It is something I will never forget and I do not wish myself younger, but it was an experience not to be missed. I pity those too young to have seen it.

I remember watching it with the family. My great grandfather who was born in 1878 just couldn’t believe it.
