On October 25, 1983, the United States led an assault on the island nation with over 1,000 troops. The force also consisted of 300 additional troops from the Caribbean. President Ronald Reagan authorized the attack because of possible links to the Soviet Union and Cuba. The military forces found documents and weapons stockpiles that proved the connection. The United States has been involved in many wars throughout its history. Track US involvement using this timeline.

Bull S***, He saved our lives, He and We did not know what we where in for. President Ronald Regan ordered our men to accomplish this job and we did. Killian should not have went though the past.
In Oct 83 I was a C130 Aircraft Maintenance Technician. My boss called me just as I returned home from a 12-hour shift and asked me “how fast can you be back here for a drag-bag exercise?” I told him that I always kept my mobility bag packed and I would be right there. I grabbed a paperback novel, a few candy bars and my mobility bag and returned to the flightline. Well, after several hours of flying in a C130, I found myself in the middle of nowhere, guiding hundreds of soldiers around the propeller arc of C130s and turning wrenches. Good thing I really packed a dragbag for “exercises”! I lived out of that bag for three weeks. As others have commented, even those of us responding as part the advance/deployment crew had no idea why we were there, but we responded to orders quickly, professionally and enthusiastically–proud to serve. By-the-way, I am a female Airman, so those of you who bought the line “Women were not deployed …”
The invasion or rape of Grenada was just one of many ways America makes sure it’s thugs and cronies get control of the Caribbean. America did not win anything, it lost a whole lot of respect from the world community that watches militaristic colonial occupation of a third world country. To claim a victory in Grenada when the geography is only 200 square miles is hardly a victory.
Maurice Bishop will always live in the hearts of people who long for freedom of expression for all and not just the rich from America. This was just plain murder 1 like all the invasions America embarks on. Maurice Bishop will always be a hero to me and others who want to see an end to American hegemony in the world!
I thought Maurice Bishop was killed by troops loyal to Bernard Coard while trying to return to power? How does this make America the bad guy?
Richard Neva – I hope you have the chance to say that to my face someday.
Pointless invasion. The USSR had already started to get bogged down in Afghanistan, which ultimately led to its demise.
They had no money or no available military capabilities to attack the US even if it wanted to. No wonder some people view the US as a pariah.
This was not picking on a little fellow, it was getting citizens of the United States back to the United States. The medical students where held for ransom. Period. You liberal can try to spin it any way you like. but I was there, you where not. so dont’ try to change history with your little lying words that dont’ mean anything to members of the armed service that made this happen quickly without injury to anybody….
My husband was one of a handful of Navy personnel that actually went ashore during the LIBERATION of Grenada, a peaceful tourist island. Words like “assault”, “attack” and “invasion” are all words that many liberal Americans like to describe this victory over communism. Cuba, supported by the Soviet Union, was in an all-out military coup on this peaceful island. Grenadian citizens were being killed and American citizens were being held hostage.
When American, British, Jamican and other countries military came to their aid and defeated the Cuban communists, the Grenada citizens rejoiced in the streets with “God Bless America”. In gratitude, they piled t-shirts on all of our soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen as they walked the streets to show their support. That liberation day is now their national “Thanksgiving Day” which they commemorated with a stamp with Ronal Reagan’s portrait.
I believe 19 American servicemen were killed in the liberation. Every year they give a scholarship to 19 students in honor of those who died liberating them.
I am continually disgusted by Americans who hate their own country, and always believe the worst without getting their facts straight.
I was in BMT @ Lackland AFB When the news came in. I Salute all of you who went. and all the serve now!
The reason for Grenada were there……. No doubt.

I believe Grenada was British sovereign territory. When will America lesrn the lesson and not interfere in the sffairs of other countries while quoting American security? Look at the mess they’ve made of Iraq.
Watching Heartbreak Ridge. Remembering when I was living in Barbados & met both the marines on R&R from the invasion a& the medical students rescued & transferred to our island. Still have fond memories of those guys.
