Those actions in The Philippines are almost always given short shrift by Americans writing about the Spanish-American War. Nevertheless, that’s where most of the fighting of the war and deaths (roughly 600,000 Filipinos and about 4000 Americans)took place. The final battles in Mindanao were fought over a decade after the Spanish surrender of Manila.

One of the more interesting facts is how the war was financed. Tt was thought a 3% excise tax on a new form of technology interstate long distance telehone calling. It paid for the Spanish Anerican war in a handful of years, but was only recently repealed.
