We celebrate Memorial Day on the last Monday in May. This holiday was originally called Decoration Day due to the practice of decorating graves of soldiers. It is a day of remembrance for those who have died serving America. Traditionally, many families gather and enjoy the outdoors with picnics and cookouts. While having fun with our families we should still remember the sacrifices that have made this freedom possible.

I feel the country needs to get back to real and true meaning of Memorial Day. While the picnics and cook outs are great, we are supposed to be remembering all those who have served our country and are currently wearing the uniform. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of our service people and their families, for they serve, too. MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!
What a lot of people do not know is that Memorial Day actually started after the American Civil War in about 1870. It was started to remember the dead and vetrans of the Civil War
Although memorial day is meant to honor those who have served, serv and died during service, we should remember to say thank you everyday. Next time you see a soldier, tell them that you appreciate their service. Check out WoundedWarriorProject.org.
I so appreciate those that serve our country because without them our freedom would be obsolete. God Bless my family members who have served and God bless the other family members who have given up their freedom so that we may have it.
Keep in mind that the reason for choosing the end of May for this holiday was due to that being when the last confederate army surrendered during the Civil War, as there were soldiers fighting for a month and a half after Lee surrendered to Grant. It was a holiday designed to honor those who fought for America, and it included both sides back in the 1880s.
Many understand that Veterans’ Day is to commemorate the end of World War I, and that is why it should always be held on November 11th-not when it is convenient. As that was the day of the Armistace that ended the Great War. So Memorial/Decoration Day was a day that came out of the Civil War.
Yes, we should thank and show respect to those who risk their lives and mental health for the lives and liberties of others.
I’m not for glorifying warriors, but I understand that soldiers and peacekeepers do their jobs in trying conditions. Sometimes it can be too much on them and they break down. A good way to remember is to contribute time to veterans and money to veterans’ facilities.
Here is some more history on Memorial Day.
