During John Adams' time as president, four acts were passed that are collectively known as the Alien and Sedition Acts. The purpose of the acts was to attempt to stop critical speech against the government. James Madison and Thomas Jefferson created a response to these acts with the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions. These documents would later be cited as key evidence in the support of states' rights including the right to nullification.
