On Christmas Eve, 1943, Dwight D. Eisenhower was named Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force. He had won the respect of the British and Canadian military leaders through his leadership on Operation Torch which was the invasion of North Africa by the allied troops. His leadership would come to the ultimate test with the D-Day Invasion, Operation Overlord, on June 6, 1944. This was the largest combined air, land, and sea military operation in history.
