We can trace the rule that evidence found illegally is inadmissible in a court of law to the court case, Mapp v. Ohio. In this case, a woman was convicted of having obscene material which was found in an illegal search of her home. The Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren decided 6-3 that the evidence had to be thrown out and therefore all charges were dropped.
