On December 31, 1879, Thomas Edison publicly demonstrated the incandescent light bulb for the first time. By 1891, the White House was wired for electric lights. Benjamin Harrison was president at the time. According to William Seale in The President's House, Harrison and his wife were so afraid of electric shock that they refused to operate the light switches themselves.
