Edward Brooke

On November 8, 1966, Edward Brooke, a former Massachusetts Attorney General was elected as the first African-American senator in U.S. history. Brooke attended Howard University and won a Bronze Star in World War II, as well as serving as Chairman of the Boston Finance Commission.
