On August 28, 1963,
Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous "I have a Dream" speech. Standing at the Lincoln Memorial, he used the words from the
Declaration of Independence to emphasize his position: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." 200,000 people marched on Washington to demonstrate for
civil rights.
The
Democratic National Convention is going strong in Denver, Colorado. The main purpose of the convention is to nominate a presidential and vice presidential candidate. However, as seen this year, it can also be a time to help overcome issues within a party and bring it together behind the chosen candidate. Most Democratic National Conventions have occurred in the month of July and most often in Chicago. The last time the convention was hosted in Denver was in 1908.
On August 23, 1927, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti
were put to death by the electric chair. A jury had found them guilty of murder in July, 1921. It was widely suspected even then that they were unjustly convicted because of their nationality and political views.
