General George McClellan was considered overcautious by many and after failing to gain Richmond in 1862, he was given a lesser command in the Union Army. In 1864, the Democrats nominated him to run against Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln won the election by 212 electoral votes to 21. However, McClellan had been able to garner 45% of the popular vote.
