Events

1676 - Nathaniel Bacon is declared a traitor by the governor of Virginia and is arrested.
1774 - The Virginia House of Burgesses is dissolved by the Governor.
1835 - A resolution stating Congress has no authority over state slavery laws is passed.
1836 - The House of Representatives passes the "gag rule" tabling all issues of slavery during the session. This will continue to be enforced until 1844.
1868 - President Andrew Johnson is acquitted of all charges of impeachment.
1938 - The House of Representatives creates a committee to investigate un-American activities under Martin Dies. This eventually focuses its efforts on the radical Left.
1952 - The Bonn Peace Treaty is signed by the United States, France, Britain and West Germany.
