1806 - Andrew Jackson kills a lawyer named Charles Dickinson in a duel. This will haunt him when he runs for President in the 1820s.
1853 - The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed allowing settlers of the Kansas and Nebraska territories to choose whether they wanted to be free land or allow slavery.
1853 - The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was repealed. This banned slavery north of the southern boundary of Missouri.
1958 - Ceremonies are performed for the burial of Unknown Soldiers from World War II and Korea at Arlington National Cemetary.
1990 - President Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev agree to reduce long-range nuclear weapons.
