George Washington was the first president of the United States. He was America's only unanimously elected president. However, his career began as a surveyor at the age of 17. He soon joined the British military and fought in the French and Indian War. He would go on to lead the Continental Army during the American Revolution. When it was time to decide on a leader for the newly created United States, Washington was the obvious choice. Many decisions that Washington made while president set precedents that are still followed today. As he himself stated, "I walk on untrodden ground. There is scarcely any part of my conduct which may not hereafter be drawn into precedent."
