Edwin M. Stanton was the Attorney General of the United States Government between 1860 and 1861. He then served as the Secretary of War from 1862 to 1868. Otto Eisenschiml in his book, Why Was Lincoln Murdered? claimed that Stanton was involved in the Lincoln Assassination plot though his theory is suspect.
