Answer: Sandra Day O'Connor became the first woman to be on the Supreme Court in 1981. She was nominated by Ronald Reagan. O'Connor had previously been an Arizona state senator and had served as a Court of Appeals judge. She retired from the court in 2006. She was seen as a centrist on the court. She was replaced by Justice Samuel Alito, Jr.
