Answer: John Marshall served the longest at 34 years from 1801-1835. His strong federal views helped shaped the United States from its earliest days. Only two other Chief Justices served more than 20 years: Roger B. Taney served 28 (1836-1864) and Melville W. Fuller served 22 (1888-1910).
