1787 - The Constitutional Convention convened in Philadelphia to draft the US Constitution.

1898 - 2500 men were dispatched to Manila as part of the Spanish-American War.

1953 - The first atomic artillery shell was fired in Nevada.

1961 - President John F. Kennedy stated that the United States would be the first to put a man on the moon.

1979 - A DC-10 leaving Chicago's O'Hare Airport crashed killing 273 people.
