1774 - Boston Harbor was closed due to the Boston Tea Party leading up to the American Revolution.

1792 - Kentucky became the 15th state and Tennessee became the 16th state admitted to the union.

1812 - President James Madison asked for a declaration of war against Great Britain to begin the War of 1812.

1813 - The American frigate Chesapeake was captured by the British. The dying words of Captain James Lawrence, "Don't give up the ship," would later become the rallying cry of the Navy.

1909 - W.E.B. Du Bois founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
