1774 - Parliament revamped the 1765 Quartering Act to include all American colonies.

1862 - General Robert E. Lee became commander of the Confederate armies of North Virginia during the civil war.

1865 - The Confederates surrendered their last seaport at Galveston, Texas.

1954 - Senator Joseph McCarthy claimed the Central Intelligence Agency had been infiltrated by Communists.
