Events:

1778 - A British peace commission arrived in Philadelphia during the American Revolution. Their offers would be rejected because of the new alliance with France.

1918 - The Battle of Belleau Wood, the first US victory in World War I, occurred.

1934 - The SEC (Securities Exchange Commission) was established.

1944 - D-day invasion of World War II began. There are 1 million men and 4,000 vessels involved in Operation Overlord.

Births:

1755 - Nathan Hale, American Revolutionary hanged for spying by the British. He said "I regret that I have but one life to give for my country."

Deaths:

1968 - Robert F. Kennedy, United States Senator

1976 - John Paul Getty
