1579 - Sir Francis Drake and his vessel the Golden Hind dropped anchor in San Francisco Bay on his voyage around the world.

1775 - The Battle of Bunker Hill (actually fought on Breed's Hill) occurred during the American Revolution. The British lost 1150 men to the colonists 441 in taking the hill.

1777 - The combined invasion of the colonies by Generals Burgoyne and Howe began.

1972 - Five men were caught breaking into the Watergate Hotel.
