1863 - The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first formal all African-American unit in the Civil War attempted to take Fort Wagner at the Battle of Fort Wagner. This event was dramatized in the excellent movie Glory.

1969 - The Chappaquiddick incident occurred where Mary Jo Kopechne died after Ted Kennedy drove off a bridge.
