1684 - Final session of the New England Confederation

1774 - First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia

1795 - America signed a treaty with the Dey of Algiers which resulted in annual tribute payments to stop the Barbary pirates from attacking American shipping.

1865 - At the end of the Civil War, South Carolina repealed its ordinance of secession.

1914 - In an extremely important battle during World War I, the French stop the Germans at the Battle of the Marne.
