1812 - Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The Americans under Captain Oliver Hazard Perry defeated the British. This is where the quote, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," comes from.

1833 - President Andrew Jackson announced that the US government will not use the Bank of the United States for deposits anymore. This causes a lot of dissension.
