Answer: The Constitution lists three requirements for any individual wishing to become a US Senator. A Senator must:

1. be a US citizen for at least nine years when elected to the Senate.
2. be at least 30 years of age.
3. be a resident of the state that the Senator represents.

Obviously, these are just the legal requirements. Typically, a US Senator has had previous policial experience before being elected though this is definitely not a requirement.
